Putting Sheffield on the Map as
Leading Voice for Drug Prevention
A Sheffield Futures (Connexions) worker has helped to put
Sheffield on the international map after being invited to
give a presentation at the first ever European Consultancy
Forum for Drug Prevention.
Donna Jones, who works in Manor and Woodthorpe, spent six
days in Ekaterinburg in Russia with colleague Tracey Ford,
Friends and
Family worker at the Drug Action Team.
Donna and Tracey presented the work they had achieved as
part of the ‘I Matter 2’ project which works with young
people who have siblings involved in drug misuse. Their
work resulted in being presented first prize for European
Youth Drugs Prevention from the Pompidou group and the Council
of Europe.
Competing against 100 entries from 44 countries across
Europe, the award was won based on several pieces of community
youth work in Sheffield, involving Sheffield Futures, Manor
Youth Project, Signpost, as well as the Drug Action Team.
The award winning projects, included that at Myrtle Springs
where young people created their own portfolio of information
with an emphasis on learning skills and literacy, which
lead to a book being published by Dwaine Barton with Wendy
Bolton.
The ‘I Matter 2’ project involved young people creating
their own drugs games based on the traditional snakes and
ladders, which saw them work on anger management, self awareness
and alternative health. The young people said they rarely
had chance to get their point of view heard as their siblings
needs dominated the families’ agenda.
