A smoke free Sheffield
Exciting plans that could see Sheffield become the first
smoke free city in the country have been given the green
light by Sheffield First Partnership. Over the next year,
the Smoke Free Sheffield Strategy hopes to encourage shops,
businesses, offices and leisure facilities across the city
to voluntarily provide smoke free areas.
The plans, put forward by Sheffield First for Health and
the city's four Primary Care Trusts (PCTs), aim to encourage
Sheffield's 98,000 smokers to kick the habit and give non-smokers
the chance to live, work and play without having to inhale
toxic tobacco smoke.
Partnership director Vince Taylor said: "Making
Sheffield Smoke Free would improve the city's image and
boost the local economy. We want Sheffield to compete with
the top cities in the world. People who don't want to breathe
in tobacco smoke when they go shopping, go to work or go
out for a drink would no longer have to. Sheffield is a
city that is actively working to improve the health of its
residents and the Smoke Free Sheffield campaign fits well
with the continued regeneration of the city."
Recent figures show 50 non-smokers in the city die of smoking-related
illnesses every year. In its first year, the Smoke Free
Sheffield team will aim to encourage 50 flagship shops,
offices, businesses and leisure facilities to sign up to
becoming smoke free.
