100 workplaces sign up for smoke
free Sheffield
An event held on Tuesday 18th January marked the significance
of over 100 workplaces making their commitment to a Smoke
Free Sheffield.
Lord Mayor Councillor Mike Pye and Simon Gilby, Chief Executive
of Sheffield West Primary Care Trust and member of Sheffield
First Partnership, officially launched the Smoke Free Sheffield
initiative in the Long Gallery - Millennium Galleries.
The Smoke Free Sheffield initiative encourages all workplaces
in Sheffield including pubs, restaurants, factories, offices,
and leisure facilities to make their premises smoke free.
A wide range of workplaces have already pledged their commitment
to providing smoke free environments for their employees,
by creating no smoking policies to protect their staff from
the dangers of second hand smoke.
Some of the smoke free workplaces that have already signed
up to the initiative include major employers such as Gripple,
diva creative, Lyceum Theatre, Ice Sheffield, East One Noodle
Bar, the Interchange, Hallam FM, Pizza Hut, BBC Radio Sheffield,
Thyme café and restaurant, Bright Finance, Abbey Bank Call
Centre, HSBC, Britannia and the Sheffield Town Hall.
Representatives from these workplaces attended the launch,
to receive certificates in recognition of their smoke free
status.
Caroline Burrows of Smoke Free Sheffield said: “Becoming
smoke free has already had a positive affect on health and
business in many other cities throughout the world.
“We are delighted to have received such tremendous support
from local employers. It reinforces Sheffield as a city
that is committed to ensuring people can live, work and
play in the city without having to breathe tobacco smoke
unless they want to.”
Lord Mayor Councilor Mike Pye said: “I’m delighted that
Smoke Free Sheffield has received such great support from
both local businesses and Sheffield people.
“Nine out of ten Sheffield residents believe that all employees
have the right to work in a smoke free environment – and
the official launch of Smoke Free Sheffield is a huge step
towards making this a reality.
“The Sheffield Town Hall, where my offices are based, is
now a smoke free environment – which means all employees
can now work without having to breathe in unwanted tobacco
smoke.
“I’d urge every organisation and workplace in the city
to sign up to the Smoke Free Sheffield initiative, and help
Sheffield lead the way in becoming a smoke free city.”
Vince Taylor, Director of Sheffield First Partnership –
the strategic regeneration partnership for the city, said:
“The Smoke Free Sheffield initiative has already received
strong backing from the partnership, and we’re delighted
with the support it’s receiving from Sheffield people and
businesses.
“We’re confident that the initiative will help improve
the health and well-being of people throughout the city.”
