An Older, Wiser Sheffield

The Sheffield First Strategy for an Ageing Population

The age profile of Sheffield is changing. The number of older people in the city is rapidly increasing and the number of younger people reducing. The Sheffield First Partnership Strategy for an Ageing Population has been developed to coordinate action in the city to respond to this change. It sets out the partnerships' long-term approach to improving the quality of life of older people and meeting the needs of the city's increasingly older population, recognising that Sheffield both already has a relatively old population (with the highest proportion of people 50+ of any of the major UK cites) and that the proportion of older people in the city is set to grow significantly over the next 20 years (with the number of people over 50 projected to rise by around a fifth and the number over 80 by around a third).

Our Aim is to effectively promote successful ageing as a mainstream function of all agencies within the City; promoting a positive approach to ageing and old age, supporting the active citizenship of older people and ensuring the delivery of high quality integrated services that enable people to live independently for longer.

The strategy sets out how the family of partnerships in Sheffield will work to continue to improve the quality of life of an ageing population in the city. To do this, four headings have been chosen to reflect key themes and activities that influence people's quality of life. These are:

Theme 1: Active in, and contributing to, stronger neighbourhoods and communities

Theme 2: Learning, working and making our experience count

Theme 3: Staying healthy and improving our well being

Theme 4: Shaping and improving our services

Responsibility for delivering the strategy is shared across the Sheffield First family of partnerships and an action plan has been agreed setting what we will be doing in the next three years to achieve the aims and objectives in the strategy. The Older People's Partnership Board (OPPB) will be monitoring and reporting on progress against this action plan to the wider Sheffield First Partnership. Detailed work to coordinate and support the further development of these actions and monitor progress will be led by the Older People's Citizen and Inclusion group (a sub group of the OPPB).
