North Sheffield Drug and Alcohol Project

The North Sheffield Drug and Alcohol Project is a multi-agency community based project working in the Southey and Owlerton wards of North Sheffield to tackle local drugs and alcohol issues. The project provides a wide range of services connected to sustainable ways of preventing, treating and tackling drug and alcohol use locally. The Project aims:

- To increase and improve access to treatment, counselling, and care available for drug and alcohol users at their local GP surgery. Two clinical nurse specialists, employed in partnership with Sheffield Care Trust, and a drug and alcohol counsellor, employed in partnership with Sheffield Alcohol Advisory Service, to work alongside local doctors to do this.
- To increase the understanding among young people about substance use issues. Drug and alcohol education sessions are organised in schools and in outreach settings. An Education Worker, employed in partnership with SHED-Turning Point (the young people’s drugs agency) works with the local police, youth service workers and teachers to do this.
- To increase local residents and workers awareness about substance use and sources of support and advice. A Community Development Worker, employed in partnership with Healthy Cross (a local community health project), works to empower local volunteers through appropriate training and involve local community members in steering the drugs project.
